Jeep began life as a prototype designed for the US Army in 1941 in response to a specification that called for a rugged, utilitarian vehicle that could "go anywhere" and required only minimal maintenance. Thousands of Jeeps were produced during the Second World War, many under license by Ford, and they saw extensive service with all of the Allied forces in every global theatre of war. The first civilian Jeep was developed in 1945, and since these early beginnings, Jeep has gone from strength to strength. The very name Jeep has developed into a generic term for any off-road vehicle of any manufacture.
Owned by Chrysler since 1987, Jeeps are manufactured in plants all over the world, including China, yet Jeep's original values have never been compromised. The marque has always been known for its off-road capabilities, and this popular value endures into today's range, although it would be true to say that much sophistication, driver and passenger comfort, and technological development has also been incorporated into Jeeps of the 21st Century.
